The season opened with a T20 game at home v Four Oaks Saints which we comfortably won by 85 runs with contributions from M.Cole 22*, S.Eccleston 2-2, M.Kaur 4-2 and N.Aslam 11-2. We followed this with games against the strongest two teams Quatt (Shropshire) and Five Ways and despite contributions of 34* from M.Hughes and 25 from Z.Smith we were defeated comfortably. A long break in the Midlands League saw a group of T20 games against some weaker opposition, and a chance for other players to be more involved in the games. A win against Harborne by 68 runs with S.Baker 35* and V.Wise 8-2 making valuable contributions. S.Eccleston captained a 28 run victory against Exhall and Wixford and also contributed 7-3. Z.Smith 38*, M.Hughes 35*, M.Cole 5-3 and S.Eccleston 4-2 aided a comfortable win against Sutton Coldfield. A slightly narrower win over Moseley by 14 runs with M.Cole 23*, M.Hughes 20 and M.Kaur 14-2 making contributions.

The return of a 40 ove game v Old Hill; an unknown team, resulted in a 5 wicket loss in the last over despite contributions from Z.Smith 33 and M.Cole 28. A break once again in 40 over cricket switched our focus to the two toughest games of the T20 season. We suffered a heavy defeat to Walmley (Z.Smith 24-3) and a slightly less heavier defeat to the eventual league winners Five Ways (M.Cole 24, M.Hughes 20). Alcester and Ragley were the final game of the 2011 season and another opportunity for other players to bat higher up the order which they relished with E.Bishop 24 and A.Oliver 30 followed by an outstanding contribution from M.Hughes with figures of 1.4-1-0-4 including a hatrick a comfortable 72 run victory ensued. We duly finished third in this league.

The final two games of the season were a mixed set of results, despite contributions from N.Aslam 25-3 and M.Hughes 22. we suffered our third defeat of the season to Five Ways. The final game of the season was against Old Hill, we had a realistic chance of winning this game, despite the efforts of the Great Brtish weather to scupper our chances a successful toss stuck Old Hill in on a vey wet wicket only to be on the field for 10 overs until it rained again, we finally agree to pay a twenty over game N.Aslam 20-3, Manjit 5-2 and M.Hughes 29* and Z.Smith 26* giving us the 10 wicket victory that we deserved. This game was by far the most enjoyable game of the season, and not ony because of the win but because of the incredible steam spirit on on display throughout the afternoon and evening. We managed to finish a very respectable third place in division 2.

Again the importance of getting 11 players out every game became even more obvious this season with much stronger oppositions. The commitment shown by the core of the squad is incredible knowing that we were playing with less than 11 in all but one game still turned up to every game. The season finale once again immaculately organised by Janet was a highlight of the season. Everyone should be pleased with their performances this year and look foward with optimism to next season however the leagues are re-structured, with a positive intense winter, a few more players, a successful season in 2012 is something we can all look forward to.

Thanks goes to Chris for his support throughout the season, and Mark for scoring. Help and support from Neal, Bridget, Steve and Kate behind the bar. Tom Colesby for his commitment in umpiring T20 games, Sue Smith for cooking a chilli for our last game. Tommo for preparing the wickets and allowing us to use sawdust when needed! And finally Carole for sitting through numerous games despite not being a massive fan of the game.

Awards Standout performances include the ladies best batting performance of the season; Sara Eccleston’s 75* against Old Elizabethans which secured us a strong total to defend with Michelle Cole also picking up the best bowling figures in the season with 4-4. Within the Womens Midlands League only one game was lost to a very strong batting line up for Stourport coupled with us only having 9 players one of which was playing in her first ever game and 2 of which had never bowled before! Ma Kaur also helped herself to two 4 fors but missed out on gaining a 5 for. Zoe Smith our youngest player who at only 13 years old picked up the most wickets in the season with 28 including three 4 fors but not quite getting the illusive 5 for. Zoe also picked up leading run scorer 357 runs which included a top score of 39* twice. In all but two games in the T20 competition Zoe was forced to retire after reaching 35 runs. Within the T20 competition we lost 2 games to Walmley and Five Ways, teams who eventually finished above us, it also included a memorable win over our close rivals Moseley who we bowled out for 28 thanks to 3-6 from Zoe. At the other end of the scale our oldest player at ahem years old! Gaynor received the award for players player due to her unquestionable commitment to every game, consistently getting us off to a good start in Sunday games and T20 games when asked to open, finishing joint second top scorer with 239 runs. Also willing to take the gloves when necessary or equally run about in the field, despite only just about recovering for the next Sunday!

Once again a tremendous effort all round and with the squad gradually expanding we can look forward to a challenging season next year against stronger opposition; Five Ways Old Eds, Handsworth, Quatt, Old Hill and Meir Heath 2XI.

My thanks go to Chris for his invaluable support and umpiring throughout the season. Mark Smith for scoring every game. The constant support we receive from Angela, Neal, Bridget, Kate and Steve, and to Tomo for preparing the pitches for us.

Notable Perfomances

Bowling
Zoe Smith 4-10, 4-19 and 4-22
Michelle Cole 4-4
Manjit Kaur 4-25 and 4-63

Batting
Zoe Smith 39* (x2) 35* (x3) 36*
Sara Eccleston 75*
Michelle Cole 48*, 35*
Michelle Hughes 35*
Gaynor Pollard 34, 33*
Kate Huntington 28*

For further stats please see our Play-Cricket site...http://moseleyashfield.play-cricket.com/teams/team_view.asp?id=10087125

Squad members 2010
Michelle Cole (Capt), Sara Eccleston (Vice Capt), Zoe Smith, Gaynor Pollard, Manjit Kaur, Puja Kaur, Michelle Hughes, Kate Huntington, Janet Stubbs, Nimmisha Aslam, Vicki Arch, Lis Bishop, Gemma Carpenter, Lucy Perkins, Emma Key, Claire Cooper

Season Review 2009

2009 saw a few additional players to the squad, the leagues were rearranged and suited to both ability and geographically we set the aim of finishing 4th in the midlands league and 5th in the Warwickshire 2020 league. Some hard work over the winter and good commitment at winter nets and early season training gave optimism heading into the season.

Following is a summary of the games played with a selection of notable performances.

Old Elizabethans
First game of the season saw Ashfield ladies travel to Old Elizabethans with 9 players, the pick of the bowlers was Ma who bowled 8 overs and picked up 4-30 including a great caught and bowled. Pick of the batters was Chelle Hughes getting to a well controlled 47 With the return of their opening bowlers they managed to get the final few wickets leaving Ashfield 15 runs short. The season ended far better than expected at the beginning of the season, we were in contention for promotion beating established teams, gave other teams a challenge. If next year we can get a full 11 out every week starting from the beginning of the season this should make our task easier. Every player this season has shown great commitment and progress and should take confidence from how far they have come this season, and look forward to next season with great optimism with the potential of competing for the title again.

Players winning awards this season are as follows

Player of the season Michelle Cole
Most improved player of the season Vicki Arch
Leading run scorer Michelle Hughes
Leading wicket taker Michelle Cole
Most Man of the match awards with 2 awards each Manjit, Kate, Shell Cole, Nemo

I wish to once again extend my thanks to Chris for his continued support and coaching throughout the season, to Neal and Bridget for their support, to Angela for all the help and support you have given and to Tommo for all his work in getting the ground prepared and supporting us at games.

Squad members 2009
Michelle Cole (Capt), Sara Eccleston (Vice Capt), Chelle Hughes, Kate Huntington, Janet Stubbs, Vicki Arch, Vicky Bentley, Vicky Sears, Manjit Kaur, Puja Kaur, Donna Bennet, Lis Bishop, Nemo Aslam, Gaynor Pollard, Laura Mason, Alice Burridge

Stats

Played 19
Won 6
Lost 6
Losing draw 1
Abandoned 2
Cancelled 1
Conceeded (oppo) 3

Leading Run scorer M.Hughes 114
Highest score 47
Leading wicket taker M. We again only travelled with 10 players, and were stuck in to bat, a poor wicket with very little bounce along with some poor shots got us all out apart from Lis Bishop who although only finishing with 1* occupied the crease for a while. Ashfield finished on 28 all out off 19 overs...what a shocker! A quick turn around and some inspirational team talking to lift everyone’s heads up, and determined we had the bowlers to test Astwood Bank. With a slight change to the opening bowlers, to take some pace of the ball saw wickets tumbling at regular intervals, some athletic fielding and good catches saw the arrogance of Astwood Bank who reversed their batting order soon knocked down, with them reeling for 11-6 with V.Arch finishing with figures of 4-0-9-3 and accepted the challenge of opening the bowling perfectly, a change of bowling from one end was the decision and Nemo stepped up, bowling brilliantly at one stage was on a hat trick, but decided to get the wicket the ball after- great jug avoidance! Nemo, finishing with figures of 0.4-0-0-3. And Astwood Bank 12 AO...what an awesome performance! Special mention must go to Lis who batted well and fielded superbly and also to Donna who under a little duress took on the challenge of keeping wicket and did a brill job!!

Notable performances

M.Cole 5-3-3-4
V.Arch 4-0-9-3
N.Aslam 0.4-0-0-3

We were drawn against Oxford ladies in the quarter finals who have in the meantime conceded the game to lack of players, so we will meet either Brackley or Shifnal in the Semi-Finals on either 16th or 23rd August tbc. Please come and support us there will be a BBQ!

Meanwhile in the league the last two games v Stourport and Astwood Bank were both abandoned so we picked up a total of 15 points. We still have two remaining league games, the title is now out of our hands, as Walmley who also have two games left and are 3.5 points ahead of us, all we can do is win our two remaining games and hope that Walmley slip up!

Ladies still in contention for title

Sun 5 July V Walmley A

Walmley were out for revenge from the last game in which we beat them by 7 wickets, they put out a mixture of players but half the team were of county standard, I won the toss and stuck them in the top four again had the ability to see them through the forty overs 3 having previously scored 100’s two quick wickets got 2 of the dangerous batters out and so left the not so experienced players at the crease to support their opener who did an excellent job at holding the innings together to enable them to bat out 34 overs and ended up 63* we were set the target of 129 which was slightly more than it should have been through only having 9 players on the field and being sloppy, not up to our usual standard of fielding. We struggled a little with the bat with only one player making double figures however, did managed to bat out the 40 overs and just managed to get enough runs to get a losing draw, which helped give us extra points and only give Walmley 10 points to help us out in the league position.

Notable performances

M.Cole 8-1-23-4

Belbroughton 12 July A

Belbroughton were an unknown quantity having not played them this season, however looking at their results it was a game we should win, travelling with 11 and a fairly strong side we were confident, having lost the toss and Belbroughton deciding to bat first, we were soon taking wickets with them only having 9 players the task was made easier for us and by 14.5 overs they were all out for 29. We knocked these runs off in 5 overs! Due to the early finish we decided to have another game of 15 overs a side to allow Belbroughton to have a bit more practice they again batted first we gave everyone a bowl and mixed bowling styles up and their batters were not allowed to be out first ball, we still got them out for 37! So again the batting order was reversed to give our players some match practice and got the runs within 11 overs, that included myself and M.Hughes fielding for the opposition and M.Hughes catching two of her own team mates out and being fined heavily! A good day all round with the 20 point win and a lot of fun was had against a really enthusiastic young inexperienced team.

Notable performances (league game)

M.Hughes 4-0-7-3
N.Aslam 4.5-0-5-4

We are currently in 3rd position 13.5 points behind 1st and with 2 games in hand over them...we are keeping ourselves in contention for the title, we have Stourport up next again an unknown quantity having not played them as yet, with a full 11 out each game we can win all our games, with only the team in first to play once and three other games against the teams in the bottom two. All support is welcomed! We will also be looking for an umpire for 26th July Home, 2nd Aug Home and 4th Aug Away (Astwood Bank) if anyone can help please??!

Ladies reach dizzy heights!!!

Ladies are now in second position in the Women’s Midlands League after three convincing consecutive wins...against Walmley 2nd XI, Astwood Bank and Old Elizabethans by 5, 7 and 6 wickets respectively, the top three teams in the league. Huge all round effort and commitment as enabled us to do this. The Astwood Bank game was played on a very small and sloping pitch next to an open prison where two convicts had just escaped! We were asked to field first and bowled Astwood Bank out for 91in 25 overs they only managed to reach that target through the help of their star player who had just scored consecutive hundreds but a juggling catch by J. Stubbs off V.Arch’s bowling got her out on 47 and the other players struggled to get more than 4 runs each. Superb bowling from Vicki A ending with figures of 5-0-19-4 and S.Eccleston 7.4-0-28-3 ensured the total was gettable. And we achieved the target of 92 with 5 wickets lost thanks to some expansive batting by K.Huntington 33* and support work by J.Stubbs 14* who got the job done in quick time.

Walmley were always going to be a tough team to beat however, they were missing a fair few members of their squad and filled it with inexperienced and young players, we again were asked to field first they had experience and ability in the top 5 that could potentially see them through the forty overs and finish with a big score, however we were on form with the ball and although there were a few simple mistakes in the field including dropped catches the bowlers continued to work hard and restricted Walmely to 79 all out with Ma picking up figures of 8-0-24-4 and S.Eccleston 7.2-2-11-3 again knowing the bowling potential Walmley had it was not going to be an easy task the openers saw off the opening bowlers who were by far the best bowlers they had M.Hughes 24* and K.Huntington saw us through to 82-3.

Old Elizabethans were the next team we faced who we had narrowly lost to by 15 runs on the first game of the season with only 9 players, if we won this and restricted their bonus points we would be in 2nd place. The team duly obliged and bowled Old Elizabethans out for 75 with the great find of Nemo on debut finishing with figures of 6-0-16-4 a small target to reach and with only 9 players in the field made the job fairly simple we knocked off the runs in 24 overs for the loss of 4 wickets. So second place is ours.

We must not now rest on our laurels with Walmley next Sunday who are likely to be fielding a much stronger team than last time. We have the two weaker sides in the league to play home and away and Astwood Bank could we be looking at the chase for promotion in only our second season??!

Moseley Ashfield V Old Elizabethans Sun 26 April

First game of the season saw Ashfield ladies travel to Old Elizabethans, with two late drop outs we travelled with 9 players, we won the toss and fielded first, a good start with the first wicket falling for only 7 runs, the runs were steadily flowing thanks to the very small boundaries and the new fielding restrictions for the first 10 overs (2 fielders within 13 yards!!) the pick of the bowlers was Ma who bowled 8 overs straight through and picked up 4-30 including a great caught and bowled. She duly won man of the match award. A few less extras would have kept their score below 100. Set a target of 142, Ashfield were confident to achieve this target and set out positively first wicket partnership put on 33 runs, with many of the Ashfield players struggling with injuries picked up during the game quick singles were not in the equation. Third in was Chelle Hughes who took the game to Old Eliz and punished all the bad balls including a 6 which would have been 6 on ‘normal’ sized boundaries! A great supportive role by Sara and the subsequent 4 batters to aid Chelle in getting to a well controlled 47 leaving us 30 runs to get in about 12 overs. With the return of their opening bowlers they managed to get the final few wickets despite a great effort to stay at the crease, leaving Ashfield to lose by 15 runs. Despite the loss, the performance and effort showed by every member of the team was faultless and shows how far we have come since last season...with 11 players we would have won.

Notable performances

M. Some hard work over the winter including a media appeal eventually reaped the rewards just in time for the first league game.

The following is a summary of all the games this season with a selection of notable performances:

First game against an experienced and established Leicester side, with 9 Ashfield players playing 40 over league cricket for the first time! Leicester 229-2 Ashfield 25 AO

2020 V Moseley against a mixed Moseley side and with 7 Ashfield players having to adapt to playing with only 8 players in a reduce format of the game. Moseley 120 AO Ashfield 21 AO. Notable performances Sara Eccleston 4-17.

A mixed and young Walmley 2nds team was up next Walmley 117-7 Ashfield 40 AO. Notable performances. Sara Eccleston 3-22 and 14, Manjit Kaur 2 run outs.

Lullington Park posed a new challenge although a new team for 2008 they had some experienced players including 3 or more county standard. Ashfield 19 AO Lullington 20-0

Birmingham returned to the Graveyard with 7 players for a 2020 game, 5 experienced one county age group player and one inexperienced. Birmingham were helped to 114-3 through 56 extras! Ashfield 89-6. Notable performances Michelle Cole 2-6 and 51*.

Five ways 2020 league brought a young but talented side 143-2 53 extras! Ashfield 35 AO.

Derby 2nds were next opposition back in midlands league after having them 82-4 after 20 overs we looked to be keeping their target in reach until a 1st team player came in and gave us all a lesson in intelligent batting and bolstering their target to 178-6. Ashfield 51 AO. Notable performances Michelle Hughes 2-29, Laura Richardson 2-31, Michelle Cole 21.

Four Oaks Saints was the game from the beginning of the season I realistically thought we had a chance of winning some good bowling and fielding we restricted them to under a hundred runs for the first time this season 99-5, a strong start meant we required 18 from 7 overs the win was ours...lack of runs from the lower order heaped pressure on themselves, 10 was needed of the final over the 5th wicket fell on the penultimate ball leaving me to return to the crease to get 9 of the last ball! Ashfield 90-6. Notable performances Michelle Cole 33*

Lullington Park away, slightly different side but still with experience and talented players some very tight and frustrating bowling from the bowlers kept Lullington’s scoring down and we had them all out for 114 in 20 overs an realistic target for us to reach however a steady loss of wickets and lack or scoring meant we were 97 AO. Noticeable performances Michelle Hughes 3-31 inc 2 c&b, Laura Richardson 3-30.

Leicester was the next game a good opportunity to see how far we had come from the first game of the season. Leicester finished on 215-7 which was credible due to their experience and ability. Ashfield finished on 50 AO, we showed our ability to stay at the crease but showed we need to score runs at the same time!

Derby were the final game of the season they came with a much weakened side bar one/two players, with very tight bowling and fielding they set us a target of 56 AO very reachable, however lack of batting again let us down and a win turned into a loss. Notable performances, Sara Eccleston 5-7.

A special mention must go to Sara Eccleston who in her first year was given the responsibility of being vice captain, opening the batting and bowling and proved herself a very capable player, this also includes being nominated by the Midlands League committee for the Women’s Midlands League North bowler of the season.

The season overall has been a success, despite results. Having spent all winter net sessions with only Chris and myself, it was never thought we would get a side out for a single game yet alone fulfil every fixture, with many people proved wrong it happened and all the credit must go to the squad who have turned up to net sessions given 100% at every game and continued to work hard despite the losses. Both myself and Chris are proud of how far everyone has come and look forward with great optimism to season 2009 as should every player. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Chris once again for his hard work and commitment coaching and umpiring, to Neal and Brigdet Anson for their support likewise Angela Brown and Tommo. Also like to welcome Nigel Udoh who has agreed to help Chris.

Squad 2008
Michelle Cole (Capt), Sara Eccleston (V.Capt), Michelle Hughes, Vicky Sears, Manjit Kaur, Puja Kaur, Vicki Arch, Kate Huntington, Laura Richardson, Alice Burridge, Laura Mason, Sarah Cripps, Claire Cooper, Michelle Doughty, Jemma Greenway, Bridget Anson.

Season Summary
Played 11
Won 0
Lost 11
No result 2

Batting
Highest score 51* Michelle Cole

Leading run scorer 118 Michelle Cole

Bowling
Best performance 5-7 Sara Eccleston

Leading wicket taker 15 Sara Eccleston

Sunday 27th V Lullington

We travelled to Lullington expecting a strong side as we had faced earlier on the season, however, they used this game to give others a chance, although still half the team were experienced, we could not have got off to a better start when S Eccleston took the openers wicket with the first ball of the game, this tight bowling continued from both ends and some good fielding to begin with only allowed an experienced player to score off the bad balls but restrict the batter at the other end. The fourth over saw the fall of the second wicket and pretty much a trend was set… with wickets falling steadily included the prized wicket of their experienced opener who posed the threat of a big score superbly frustrated by M.Hughes who caught and bowled her. Some good batting by numbers 4 and 5 aided by some loose bowling helped push their score along, wickets continued to fall, and their final two batters added to their total with some quick scoring, I think the offer of money or lager proved a good incentive for the bowlers to take wickets…! Ashfield bowled Lullington out for 144 in 20 overs. Unfortunately unlike men’s cricket we don’t get their overs although making them field for 60 overs could have been interesting! With 40 overs to reach 145 seemed realistic and we had the potential to do it. We started off positively thanks to some lose bowling from their openers, being 36 off 4 overs this was the start we needed. First wicket fell, but the next 3 partnerships worked hard with each other and kept the scoring ticking along. After a steady loss of wickets V.Arch showed determination to occupy the crease for as long as possible and did this very well. Ashfield ended up 97 AO of 30.1 overs. Every one worked extremely hard on what was a very hot day and again we continue to improve, bowling a side out in 20 overs and our totals continue to increase every game. Mention must go to three newcomers to the side Lorraine Stone, Becky Diddierserre and Jemma Greenway both of the latter playing their first 40 over game.

M.Hughes 4-0-27-3
L.Richardson 2.2-0-30-3
L. Bowling first we kept the bowling fairly tight but again leaking too many extras, but managing to take some wickets and restrict the scoring when the bowling was accurate. We achieved something we haven’t done all season and restricted the opposition to under 100 runs. We looked with optimism to our batting and believed we could win the game. We got off to a good steady start taking the runs when possible putting the bad balls away increasing the pressure on the fielders and bowlers. After M.Cole had to retire and a couple of wickets had gone the scoring dried up and the FOS were beginning to get back on top even with them also leaking runs through extras. With the equation of 18 to win of 7 overs the game appeared to be ours, however, some very good bowling from their opener and ably supported at the other end, bowled two maidens in a row something rare in a 2020 game, this heaped the pressure back on the lower order batters, with wickets falling and FOS trying their best to restrict scoring whilst not taking the penultimate wicket bowled superbly and left us requiring 10 of the final over they took the 6th wicket on the penultimate ball allowing M.Cole to return to the crease requiring 9 of the last ball to win, which wasn’t achieved. Credit must go to FOS who fielded and bowled tremendously to grab victory from what surely looked like a loss. Ashfield girls must now learn from this with the most important lesson to play attacking cricket in 2020 games we cannot afford to block, we need to play some shots and look to work the ball for singles, we need to start adapting our batting for different formats of the game. Also ensuring we bowl straight and field sharply to ensure we don’t gift the opposition extra runs and make our life harder when chasing.

M.Cole 33*

Sun 20th V Derby

Selecting to bowl first again we had derby 82-4 after 20 overs and were looking to keep the runs down and get the remaining wickets. With some good bowling, players again reaping the rewards for bowling straight we took a couple of more wickets. However one of their senior players a regular 1st teamer came to the wicket and gave us all a lesson in intelligent batting, playing shots and working the ball around to keep the scoreboard ticking over. We must learn that when this is happening we need to think about how deep we are in the field and ensure we are attacking the ball to cut out the singles. Set the target of 178 we got off to a slow and steady start facing some tight bowling. With determination from a number of players we batted for 33.4 overs the longest we have lasted although scoring only 51. The two openers punished the bad ball and played very well, with them both reaching 30 and 33 respectively and having to retire, the subsequent batters were not scoring as freely but still under no pressure to score runs and boosted the total up to 143 runs 53 being extras. Our batting was not great and were all out after 16.2 overs for 35. Lessons must be learnt from games like these, we must tidy up our bowling and start to be much more attacking with our batting.

Tuesday 24th June V Birmingham Women

Birmingham Women returned to the Graveyard with 5 experienced players and a couple inexperienced, although one a U11 county player in the 7. Again having won the toss, I learnt and listened from Sunday and decided to field first, with some tight bowling to begin with saw the dismissal of the one opener bowled. However, the number 1 batsman was punishing the bad ball, as were the following batsman coming in, with runs freely coming from extras the batters had it easy and were not put under pressure to score runs, Manjit then reaped the rewards for bowling straight with the important wicket of number 3. The runs from the bat soon dried up with two inexperienced batters at the crease although they were still putting the bad ball away and always taking singles, Birmingham finished with 114, although only 58 of these runs came off the bat, with 22 wides being bowled all worth two runs and 12 byes totalling 56 extras almost doubling their score, we need to learn the importance of bowling accurately consistently. 114 was a realistic target to get, we knew they would not give away as many extras and would be tight with their bowling, the two openers were out without any runs off the bat. Some good supportive work from 4,5,6 allowed myself to reach 33 when I had to retire with the lower order seeing off a few overs taking some singles when available, with 3 overs left and 6 down I returned to the crease and again some excellent supportive work and running by Manjit allowed a further 20ish to be added for no loss meaning Ashfield finished on 89-6, although 63 came off the bat and only 26 extras bowled it is clear to see the difference of bowling accurately consistently. Hopefully this has been another lesson learnt and with a couple of bowlers back next game we can improve upon this.

The game was finished off with a great curry provided by the Anson’s which was enjoyed by all home team and away team, thanks once again. After winning the toss and deciding to bat first for a change, to give Ashfield girls the experience of setting a target, we were bowled out extremely cheaply for 19 after 21 overs. With heads down and an almighty task ahead Lullington knocked this off with 4.2 overs. Two mentions must go to Laura R who came and supported us, even though she could not play and got roped into scoring. We won the toss and chose to field first. Their two openers made a good positive start showing patience and experience putting the bad balls away, until Manjit expertly ran out the batter whilst she was backing up! Some tight fielding and accurate throwing again by Manjit got another run out with a direct hit. After the top three batters were out they struggled to score, mainly due to the tight bowling of Chelle Hughes on her comeback game for Ashfield and Vicky Sears on her return to the side for this season. Once again Sara Eccleston struck in her second spell finishing with 3 wickets. The fielding again was tight and bowling is becoming more accurate, although two improvements in the field for the next game are needed; more urgency in retrieving the ball and getting through overs and secondly more noise, it was far too quiet on Sunday! Walmley finished their innings on a gettable score of 117. Batting again was a disappointment, although we scored more than previous games. With only 4 people scoring and the top score being 14 (Sara) vast improvements are needed from everyone, so everyone is contributing. In terms of batting, the result points out the importance of playing straight as they bowled very accurately on the stumps and people got bowled playing across the line. With some more intense work on batting in training this shall come with time.

Notable performances

Michelle Cole 8-2-12-1
Sara Eccleston 8-4-22-3 and 14
Michelle Hughes 8-2-15-0
Vicky Sears 8-3-12-1

We now look to the next match which is a rearranged game V Lullington @ Britannic 2pm on Sunday 22nd June.

Followed by 2020 game V BIRMINGHAM WOMEN Tuesday 24th June @ Graveyard 6pm. Again I lost the toss but again we were asked to field first, which once again we did with great ability, with the girls soon adapting to having less players in the field and having to do much more chasing, the bowling was again a little inconsistent, however, the shorter spells seemed to benefit. Again the score was helped along with the extras we all gave away, Moseley got off to a good start and the openers got themselves in punishing the bad balls. Until there was some great sharp fielding that dismissed both the openers through run outs. Cue Ashfield girls going mental. Sara then came on for her second spell and reaped the benefits of straight bowling, with Moseley also looking to up their run rate, Sara bowled straight and took 4 wickets cue Ashfield girls going mental x 4, an excellent effort after also being given the responsibility of bowling the last over. Our batting was again our downfall, however, it again provided us with more experience of match situations. There was a vast improvement from Sunday’s game and if we can keep up the effort everyone continues to put in and attends training regularly we can look forward to our next games with confidence.

Moseley’s nominated Man of the Match Award Goes to Sara 4-17 & good batting

Ashfield’s Man of the Match Award also goes to Sara

And to Zoe Smith from Moseley who as an under 11 making her first XI debut bowled v.well 2-4

Our next 2020 fixture is at home again against Five Ways OE Tuesday 27th May 6pm all support is appreciated.

Leicester (A) Sun 11th May

After a long wait to get the 2008 season underway Moseley Ashfield Ladies travelled to Leicester on Sunday 11th May, this was to be a new experience for all but one of the squad, with 9/10 players making their debut in cricket. After loosing the toss but being asked to field we started positively with the fielding being very tight, the bowling was slightly inconsistent but bearing in mind players had only bowled a few in the nets was an achievement. On came Laura Mason (ballerina) who bowled one wide decided to appologise and then next ball bowl the opening bat and go absolutely crazy! The subsequent bowling and fielding was a great positive to take from the game. Although there were far too many extras with bolstered Leicester's score with practice and match experience I am positive these will be reduced. After tea we prepared to bat, which after the succes in the field came as a disappointment to many of the players, however, both I and Chris saw potential and again with more practice and experience of facing bowling out of a net situation will improve significantly. Overall, against a experinced and established Leicester team the girls can be proud of their first game. We now need to work hard at training and get as much match practice as possible and no doubt we will improve upon that performance at the next game. Well done girls a positive satart with a great deal learn't.

Next Midlands League fixture is away at Walmely Sunday 25th May

New era for womens cricket @ MACC

Welcome to a new era for womens cricket at MACC, a successful winter recruitment campaign has resulted in a promising new squad for 2008 and beyond. With many games being played with less than 11 players, or with two or three complete newcomers to the game this included Bridget Anson turning out in whites for her debut against Anston, the league position was something to be encouraged by. The team was uplifted by the arrival of Sarah Aley the Warwickshire overseas player, as an Australian international she was undoubtedly talented and a leap above any of us, the desire to win she brought to the side, resulted in the rest of the team increasing their performance, many games she dominated the opposition but the game that stands out the most must be the game where she scored 203* against Old Grammarians. A mention also must go to Leanne Haines who as the youngest member of the squad has made a significant improvement in both effort and performance, she was also selected to captain the boys under 13 in a game which she did with great ease and easily outshone them all. The game that stood out from the season was indicative of the 2007 summer, rain. With the square sodden and not having played for a couple of weeks we were keen to keep our promotion hopes alive and play against Derby who were also in high contention for the league title, cue bed sheets, Chris Bourne and a number of our team walking up an down the wicket, with a delayed start we played this game but narrowly lost. We finished the season in a respectable third place.

The 2020 league was a successful campaign, not only on the field whereby we finished second by only 0. 31 points!! but off the field much due to the huge support shown by the Anson family making curry for the team and opposition but also travelling to away games to show support. The title decider as ever came down to the last game against Walmley, they were ultimately far too strong for us and generally a poor performance gifted them the title.

Again thanks must go to Chris for his invaluable contribution throughout the season, coaching and advising, similarly for himself and Tommo for the work put in to get games played in a very difficult season. Overall the season was generally a success, however, there is still promotion and league titles to win, with a few players leaving, the squad numbers will need to increase so the same few players are not being relied upon game after game to perform as the stats suggest.

2008 sees a new beginning for Moseley Ashfield Ladies, with one remaining member we hope to encourage more ladies to participate and to enjoy the game, by competing in the Northern section of the Midlands 2nd division.

MACC vs. Derby 22nd July

MACC came agonisingly close to beating top of the table Derby on Sunday.

Derby were restricted to just 78-9 off 40 overs. Shell Cole and debutant Sarah Aley started the innings with very tight bowling which appeared to frustrate the Derby openers. The breakthrough finally came with a sharp catch by C Todd off S Aley's bowling.

Throughout the innings there was excellent fielding including two direct hits which sent the Derby players back to the pavilion. MACC started their innings patiently and took time to 'get in' on a slow and sometimes erratic pitch. Maria Fowler showed confidence playing shots where possible given the tight bowling by Derby. S Aley coped with the 'non Australia' conditions with confidence and looked set to lead MACC to victory but the loss of wickets at regular intervals left her with too much to do.

MACC finished on a disappointing 73 all out. MACC should take confidence from the performance and with a little more experience should be able to turn these close matches into victories.

Player of the match goes to S Aley

MACC v. Anston 20th May

Sunday proved to be another close match against Anston. MACC Ladies started slowly but this was due to some excellent bowling from the Anston captain who eventually ended up taking 5-12.

G Law, M Hughes and L Haynes all chipped in with vital contributions and supported K Barton (56) and eventually MACC recovered from 23-4 to post a total of 118 all out.

Anston started solidly and looked in control until C Todd made the break through. She then followed this up by taking an excellent catch deep on the boundary to remove their captain. This proved to be the turning point of the match and Anston quickly collapsed to 102 all out. G Law, L Haynes and M Cole also picked up wickets.

Captain’s pick for player of the match goes to C Todd – for some very sharp fielding which proved to be the difference between the teams.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://maccwomenscricket.blogspot.com/2007/05/macc-v-anston-20th-may.html' title='MACC v.
